The existence of the canteen is directly related to the battles between German and French troops fought for the HWK summit. During the war, the German General Staff was established here. Later, ZELLER's sons, Louis and Joseph, settled in the premises and in particular in the former canteen and entertained the numerous visitors to the former battlefield. They were accompanied by Anna WUHRLIN, who married Joseph in 1920. The buildings were expanded, wooden structures enlarged the existing canteen, which became the ZELLER canteen and a youth hostel with up to 40 beds with a kitchen, refectory and terrace. The many walkers always found good accommodation here and could also visit the war museum created by Joseph, who constantly wandered through the mountain in search of remains. Sadly, Joseph ZELLER died in 1930. Anna decided to stay and continue her work. Today the canteen is run by a voluntary association and offers drinks for visitors.
