Inaugurated in May 1970, this monument is intended to "express the European-democratic attitude of the border population on both sides of the border." The two pylons represent the countries of Germany and France, which have been at war with each other for centuries. The metal bars in the upper area symbolize the friendship that developed after the Second World War.

A popular viewing point and at the same time a landmark of the municipality of Überherrn is the monument 'For the Great Europeans' (in short: Europe Monument) in Berus. In 1970 it was erected here on one of the highest points in the entire region on the initiative of the former Saarland Finance Minister and Überherrn citizen Helmut Bulle by the 'Association for the Erection of a Monument for the Great Europeans' as a symbol of German-French reconciliation. On July 2, 1966, former Chancellor Konrad Adenauer broke ground. The monument with a memorial plaque for the statesmen Konrad Adenauer, Robert Schuman and Alcide de Gasperi was unveiled in May 1970. Helmut Bulle, Josef Besch and Paul Henri Spaak are other personalities who have been honored with a plaque. The wide view over the valleys and forests of Lorraine and the wonderful view over the Saar valley invite you to admire the border region ‘at a glance’.🚵♂️🌄

Alcide de Gasperi (1881-1954) Alcide de Gasperi, born on April 3, 1881 in Trient (South Tyrol), studied law - like Adenauer and Schuman - and worked as a journalist from 1905. As a member of his home province, he has been a member of the Austrian parliament since 1911. He was imprisoned for three years from 1926 to 1929 for anti-fascist activities. Later, during the German occupation of Italy, he belongs to the resistance movement. As co-founder of the Catholic People's Party (Partito Popolare) and chairman of the "Schuman Plan", Alcide de Gasperi became President of the Parliament of the Coal and Steel Community in 1954. Like Adenauer and Schuman, de Gasperi received the International Charlemagne Prize of the city of Aachen. That same year, on August 19th 1954, Alcide de Gasperi dies in Sella di Valsugana in South Tyrol Source: Text information board

Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967) Konrad Adenauer, born on January 5, 1876 in Cologne, started his studies - like Robert Schuman - initially as a lawyer. In 1906 he became an alderman and in 1917 lord mayor of his hometown of Cologne. In 1933 he was dismissed from the Nazi regime as President of the Prussian State Council because he resolutely fought against National Socialism. Adenauer is imprisoned twice. In 1948 the later chairman of the Christian Democrats was elected President of the Parliamentary Council, on September 19, 1949 he became the first Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany (until 1963). Together with his friend Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer creates the conditions for Franco-German reconciliation and thus the unification of Europe. Konrad Adenauer died on April 19, 1967 in Rhöndorf near Bonn. Source: Text information board

European monument - symbol of Franco-German friendship The monument consists of two parallel 18 meter high reinforced concrete disks (pylons), which represent the two nations of France and Germany. In accordance with the common historical roots of the two peoples, the panes penetrate a platform in their lower part, which leads the visitor to plaques on the inside of the concrete panes. The inscriptions on the tablets recall the work of the "Great Europeans" Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer and Alcide de Gasperi. In the upper part, a bundle of rays made of metal rods connects the monument - symbolizing the many and varied friendly interdependencies between the neighboring countries of Germany and France today. After a long period of coexistence between the two peoples, the monument describes the togetherness. Source: Text information board The monument "For the great Europeans" - a European idea The idea of erecting the monument in Berus goes back to the former Saarland finance minister and Überherner citizen Helmut Bulle (1925 - 1973). Shaped by his own war and post-war experiences, he soon belonged to the politicians who - convinced by the thoughts of Robert Schuman from Lorraine - tirelessly advocated Franco-German reconciliation for the benefit of a united Europe. On his initiative, the idea of the monument on the Saarland-Lorraine heights near Berus became a reality. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1966 by former Federal Chancellor Dr. Konrad Adenauer instead. The monument was completed and inaugurated in 1970 under the patronage of the Saarland Prime Minister Dr. Franz-Josef Röder. A memorial plaque in the lower part of the monument commemorates the builder and idea generator Helmut Bulle. Source: Text information board

The landmark of the community, the 16-meter-high European monument, rises on the summit of the Linsenhübels in Berus at a height of around 360 m. The construction, designed by the former building director of Saarlouis, Gerald Motsch, consists of two reinforced concrete slabs (pylons) protruding parallel into the sky, which penetrate a viewing platform in the lower part, from which the visitor can enjoy a wide view of the Saar valley or France . In the upper part, the concrete slabs are connected to one another by nine metal rods arranged in a radial pattern. The two pylons symbolize the two neighboring nations, Germany and France, whose common historical roots are represented by the platform and whose meanwhile diverse amicable interdependencies are represented by the bars. The monument was completed and inaugurated in 1970 under the patronage of the Saarland Prime Minister Dr. Franz-Josef Röder. In front of the European monument there has been a plastic of a blue deer since 2007. This is the official logo of the Capital of Culture Luxembourg, which was awarded this title by the European Union in 2007 together with the surrounding Greater Region.
