Be sure to plan a full day for Figeac, with its charming half-timbered houses. The Champollion Museum – Les Ecritures du Monde is well worth a visit. It is dedicated to the French explorer who was the first to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs.

A nice city with many beautiful buildings.

Figeac is home to the Champollion museum. Jean Francois Champollion was the decipherer of Egyptian hieroglyphs and was born in Figeac on 23 December 1790. The old town of Figeac has plenty of interesting architecture, numerous restaurants, cafes and hotels.

It is best to start the visit at the central and imposing Maison de la Monnaie with the Office de Tourisme. In the picturesque old town there are numerous stately houses from the Middle Ages.

Figeac, designated a City of Art and History, lies in the heart of the Célé Valley, on whose banks it is built. Its charming medieval streets and half-timbered houses are part of its appeal. Sights include the Champollion Museum – Writings of the World and the market, held on Saturdays.
