After Lourdes and Lisieux, this is the third largest pilgrimage site in France and the most important in Brittany. A farmer experienced apparitions of St. Anne and was commissioned to rebuild a chapel from the 6th century. However, no remains of it remained. While searching his fields, he discovered old graves and a statue of St. Anne. This was the starting point for an important pilgrimage! Unfortunately, almost everything was destroyed during the French Revolution, so that only a small part of the old image is integrated into the new statue.

The old port of Auray is well worth stopping at for some food, drink and/or ice cream. It has lots of lovely old Breton buildings and has a distinct medieval vibe.
