The gate tower, along with the city wall, was part of the medieval city fortifications. Its passageway, the so-called Schwaikheim Gate, was the main entrance to the old town. The masonry, together with remnants of the city wall, represents the oldest surviving structure. The timber-framed upper floors were rebuilt 15 years after the devastating city fire of 1693. The tower houses the city museum, including the old prison cell. The top floor contains the so-called "Gate Rooms," which Winnenden residents can rent for celebrations.

Particularly worth seeing is the upper part of Marktstrasse from the Schwaikheim gate tower with the market square, the historic half-timbered houses around it and the market fountain.

Great place to take a break and have a bite to eat or drink or just enjoy an iced coffee.

There is a kiosk on each side of the lake.
