Freight shipping has almost completely disappeared on the Canal du Midi. Today sport boats, houseboats and passenger ships operate in large numbers. The lock staircase is used by up to 60 ships a day in the summer months. In order to be able to cope with this amount, a one-way system was introduced in which the waiting watercraft are either only pushed downwards or only upwards several times a day during fixed periods of time. Three of the usual tourist boats fit into each chamber. The lockdown takes about 30 minutes and upwards about 45 minutes. When locking down, the groups of ships are moved downwards together with a single chamber filling. When moving upwards, one chamber filling is used for each stage. To speed up the process, each chamber is filled from the second higher chamber. The water exchange happens faster because of the increased level difference, but an additional chamber filling is also lost.

From 1681 until the opening of the Béziers canal bridge over the River Orb in 1857, canal boats had to use the river bed of the Orb for a distance of 800m, which often caused problems with the fluctuating water level of the small river, despite a built-in dam. Although Vauban had already proposed an aqueduct across the Orb, it was not implemented as "too ambitious and too expensive". In 1854 the Canal latéral à la Garonne was almost finished. This means that the continuous canal connection from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean would only have been disturbed by the crossing of the Orb in Béziers.
