The Alster - that is much more than "just" the inner and outer Alster in inner-city Hamburg. The Alster is a river that has its source in Schleswig-Holstein in the municipality of Henstedt-Ulzburg and from there meanders its way towards Hamburg. Cyclists can ride the entire length of the Alster - that's 56 km - from the source to the mouth or vice versa. For canoeists, too, the Alster is an exciting and, above all, very varied paddling area up to the height of the Wulksfelder lock. Villas, parks, well-kept cycle paths characterize the course of the Alster near the Outer Alster. Upstream it gets narrower and the vegetation lusher and wilder.
