The 18-metre-high column is made of granite and topped with a cast iron sculpture of a greyhound symbolising France defeating an English leopard. Inaugurated on 18 September 1858, it commemorates the French victory of 1758, one of the rare ones over the English during the Seven Years' War. Commanded by the Duke of Aiguillon, it allowed the English troops to be pushed back after two and a half hours of intense combat. The Latin inscription engraved on the column means: "Better death than a stain, you alone are great and make great events".
