The oldest dwellings in Pontrieux, including the Maison de la Tour Eiffel, date from the 16th and 17th centuries and are half timbered houses made from stone, cob and wood. Not all towns have half timbered houses and those that do, often only have a few that are still standing. They certainly draw visitors who love the uniqueness of the buildings. The easy to spot blue half timbered house, sits in the centre of town in Place Yves Le Trocquer and is worth a look. One of the few surviving half-timbered houses and the most famous building in the city is a blue half-timbered house nicknamed the Tour Eiffel (16th century). However, it has little to do with the builder of the famous Parisian landmark Gustave Eiffel. In front of the house there used to be a tower for monitoring shipping traffic, but the nickname is supposed to come from the similarity of the blue framework with the steel construction.
