7月 23, 2025, Abbaye de Cluny
The town of Cluny was based on the Benedictine monastery (Cluniac Abbey), founded in 910. The abbey was the starting point and center of the Cluniac reform at the beginning of the 10th century. Cluny reached its peak membership at the beginning of the 12th century, with approximately 400 monks. The last abbey church (Cluniac III) was the world's largest Romanesque basilica and, until the construction of today's St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, the largest church in Christendom. The church had seven towers. Although large parts of the building were destroyed, the remaining relics are absolutely remarkable and make a visit to Cluny an unforgettable experience!

Founded in 910, Cluny Abbey was a powerful centre of the Benedictine order and influenced the spiritual and cultural life of all of Europe at its height. Today, although much of the abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, you can still explore the remaining parts of the vast complex, including the majestic bell tower and restored cloister.

Cluny Abbey was at its time the largest Romanesque church in the world. The parts that remain today following its dismantling remain impressive, notably its immense tower. The Cluny City Museum of Art and Archeology adjoins the main entrance to the church ruins.

The city of Cluny owes its development to the influence of Cluny Abbey which was the most powerful abbey in medieval Christianity. The result is the survival of an exceptional heritage, much of it inherited from the medieval period. Thus, the streets of the city offer the spectacle of medieval houses, the concentration of which is remarkable. The national stud farm and the art and archeology museum complete the city's cultural and sporting offerings.

In the ZDF media library there is an exciting and informative film report "It is the center of one of the most important reform movements of the High Middle Ages and at times the largest church in Christianity - the Abbey of Cluny, a sacred miracle building.": https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/zdfinfo-doku/die-abtei-von-cluny-geheimnisvoller-wunderbau-100.htmlhttps://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/zdfinfo-doku/die-abtei- from-cluny-mysterious-wonderful-building-100.html

Cluny, although small, has all the assets of a big city: exceptional monuments, museums and churches as well as charming shopping streets with gardens and quiet squares.

Cluny Abbey was one of the nerve centers of Christianity for many centuries. Its church was gigantic and was by far the largest Romanesque church in the world. Its proportions defy all rationality. Unfortunately, today only a tiny part of what it was remains. Fortunately, there remains one of its huge towers that you reach by moving through the foundations of what this church was. It is very moving. Begun during the French Revolution, the dismantling of the church was completed by Napoleon I who ordered that the stones of the abbey be used for the construction of the national stud farms. The safeguarding of the Cluniac heritage is largely due to an American archaeologist who for many years saved its treasures. The art and archeology museum of the town of Cluny, adjoining the main entrance to the ruins of the church, exhibits all its finds. The Romanesque Benedictine abbey church was the largest church in the West until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is believed that the abbey church could hold up to 10,000 pilgrims, at a length of just under two football fields. The monastery was continuously extended from 910 to the 12th century. During this time, Cluny became a major spiritual power among important abbots. In 1790 the monastery was closed and gradually sold for demolition. At the beginning of the 19th century, the once most magnificent church in the world ended up as a quarry and ruined field. From the former "miracle of the occident" remained only few remains. The more than 100,000 visitors a year (therefore visit as early in the morning and not on weekends!) Experience Cluny therefore above all in his imagination, about his knowledge of the former historical significance and the well-made computer simulation. So, from here we go back towards Taizé and Cormatin to the point where we came to the Voie Verte and then continue as described.

Even the remaining sections of this once largest church in the world are still impressive: Cluny Abbey (or Cluni, or Clugny, French pronunciation: [klyni]) dedicated to St Peter, is a former Benedictine monastery in Cluny, Saône-et-Loire, France. It was built in the Romanesque style, with three churches built in succession from the 4th to the early 12th centuries. The earliest basilica was the world's largest church until the St. Peter's Basilica construction began in Rome. By the time of the French Revolution, the monks were so thoroughly identified with the Ancien Régime that the order was suppressed in France in 1790 and the monastery at Cluny almost totally demolished in 1810. Later, it was sold and used as a quarry until 1823. Today, little more than one of the original eight towers remains of the whole monastery.
