Anyone interested in the Second World War can get a very interesting insight into the structure, function and life in a coastal defense battery. Tours can be taken here with an audio guide in various languages (including German). It's worth it and the entrance fee of €8 per person (as of May 2024) is absolutely fair.

Built by the Germans between 1941, this defense line constituted with its 170 men garrison an essential node at the Atlantic Wall. Located not far from Utah Beach, it was taken on June 9, 1944 at the start of the fighting. It is now a place of free access to memory.

This bunker system is one of the most important key positions on the D-Day of the Utah Beach section. The well-preserved bunkers with accessible underground passages make a visit to the museum an experience. Impressive is the penetration of a 356 mm shell, fired from several kilometers away from the battleship USS Nevada, which hit one of the installations and disabled them. An audio guide in various selectable languages provides important background information at the respective stations.

This battery was further from the coast and less visible than that of Crisbecq and was built a short distance from the village because of the possibility of disguising the casemates as houses. The battery was equipped with 105mm guns, with no sea sight. The soldiers had a good time in the bunker that was furnished with a casino with bar, stage and girls of fun. The water reservoir served as a swimming pool. The complex is very well preserved, especially the underground passages are almost completely intact. Apart from the design, you can also see what effect the impact of a 356mm shell from the Nevada had on the battery.

Memorial de la Liberte Retrouvee. This atmospheric museum gives an impression of the difficult living conditions in the dark years of the German occupation. A reconstruction of a street, a bunker, photos, pamphlets, propaganda newspapers and all kinds of other material realistically illustrate daily life at that time. (Michelin)

Don't we love to see ourselves as liberators, both the 'free' French and the Americans -- though WW II was probably the last time this was actually the case; even the German flag is flying high among the allies above this cheesy WW II history museum, probably more due to their attempt at attracting tourists than an expression of their museum quality 🤔
