The abbey church of the former Benedictine monastery in Beaulieu dates back to the 12th century. Romanesque at its finest. The south portal is particularly impressive, with its detailed tympanum depicting Christ with his disciples. The adjoining bell tower dates from the 14th century. Only the remains of the monastery walls and the chapter house remain.

This superb town, located on the edge of the Dordogne, is worth a stop. It has been known since the Gallic era. The place was strategic and has remained so throughout history. The town controlled the access linking Armorica to the Mediterranean Sea. This situation made it a place where wealth circulated. It was in the 18th and 19th centuries that its economic growth increased thanks to the use of barges, these flat-bottomed boats that could navigate shallow waterways.

Nowadays, very few mills are still in operation in their original function, but appear to cyclists along the river as technical-historical monuments of an ancient craft tradition: The heavy millstones inside were moved solely through human ingenuity and the power of the chestnut water as driving energy, so that, for example, grains could be ground into flour (so-called grain mills) or oil could be pressed from (e.g. olive) fruits (so-called oil mills). .

A medieval city built on the right bank of the Dordogne, Beaulieu has been nicknamed "the Limousin Riviera" thanks to the mildness of its climate, which is conducive to the cultivation of strawberries. We first come here for its remarkable Saint-Pierre abbey church, whose portal, a masterpiece of Romanesque art representing the return of Christ at the end of time, can be compared to that of Moissac. We stroll happily through the alleys, we compare the facades topped with turrets, decorated with medallions and cherubs, like the house of Adam and Eve, we dream in front of the Chapel of the Penitents and its steeple-wall which is reflected in the waters of the Dordogne. Nearby, you can embark on a barge from May to October, to relive the epic of the bargemen who went down to Libourne to deliver their loads of wood for the Bordeaux cooperage.
