The refuge is located directly at the Hausecker Forest, directly on the over 2,000-year-old Roman road, a historic trade and military route. It is located within the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley Cultural Landscape, which underscores its cultural significance.

Good to drive and nice view

From the local history book of Dr. Ernst Brod Patersberg: The Patersberg church was probably built between 800 and 900, and its nave was completed in the 11th century. The 33-meter-high church tower with its loopholes was completed in 1528.

From A. Hell Patersberg's local history: The church tower was added in 1400 and is 33 meters high. It houses three bells: a small bell cast in 1558, a small patron bell cast in 1818 in Stralsund, and a large bell from 1778. The church tower burned down three times: in 1546 by lightning, in 1584 by a major fire in the upper village, and in 1890, when the lower part of the village was almost completely burned down by flying sparks. That's the story from the local history.

When the church of Patersberg was built and who built it is completely unknown. It is said to have been a pilgrimage church in the early Middle Ages. What is certain is that the church was originally dedicated to Saint Pancras. The church was probably built in three different periods. The tower is early Gothic, still reveals a Romanesque sense of space and may have been built in its current form around 1200. Three Romanesque columns on the upper church tower windows remain a mystery; they are certainly older. The rest of the church is Romanesque. The nave is estimated to be from the 12th century, while the choir was built perhaps in 1100 or even as early as 900. The church probably also served defensive purposes at some point; the tower still has several loopholes today. The nave also used to have several smaller windows (or at least niches) than it does today.
