A unique architectural whole The citadel of Arras was never besieged, hence its nickname “the belle inutile”, and is a well-preserved witness of the military buildings of the 17th century.

Once past the Porte Royale you will immediately see the Timescope on the side of the Saint-Louis chapel. This takes you back to 1678, 10 years after the start of the construction of this citadel on behalf of King Louis XIV of Vauban.

You can visit the citadel of Arras, a remarkable place in France. Vauban built it in the 1600s and it has preserved a rich legacy from its 300 years of military use. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 after they demilitarized it. You can enjoy historic buildings, green trails and fun activities in this “small city within a city”.

The Mur des Fusillés is a memorial located in the moats of the Citadel of Arras, Hauts-de-France. It is a poignant reminder of the tragic history of 218 patriots who were shot dead by German troops during World War II. The memorial is dedicated to these victims of different nationalities during the years after the Battle of Arras and is worth a visit to understand and remember the brutality of this dark period in history. The memorial is located at the Citadel of Arras, where the patriots were executed between August 21, 1941 and July 21, 1944. The design of the memorial has been deliberately kept simple, to maintain the authenticity of the site and allow visitors to see the setting that witnessed these tragic events. The only monument present in the memorial is a pole, recreated as exactly as possible from the one to which the victims were tied. In addition, 218 plaques mounted along the walls of the citadel commemorate each victim, and a plaque at the entrance to the memorial invites visitors to commemorate the sacrifice of these patriots. The Mur des Fusillés is located near the Citadel (near the old gate), Jardin du Polygone, and another place of remembrance which is the Military Cemetery of Faubourg d'Amiens. The site remains open to the public every afternoon from 2pm to 7pm.

From August 21, 1941 to July 21, 1944, 218 patriots were shot by the Germans in the ditches of the Citadel of Arras. Four in 1941, ninety-three in 1942, forty-three in 1943 and seventy-eight in 1944. The youngest of these martyrs was 16 and a half years old, his name was Julien DELVAL; the oldest was 69 years old, his name was Henri QUEVAL. Those shot belonged to nine different nationalities: 189 French, 15 Poles, 5 Belgians, 3 Soviets, 2 Portuguese, 1 Italian, 1 Hungarian, 1 Czech, 1 Yugoslav. All social categories were represented: 1 priest, 7 teachers, 10 artisans, traders, 11 farmers, 16 employees, civil servants, 10 SNCF railway workers, 33 workers, 130 miners.
