5月 22, 2024, Submerged Chapel of Fröttmaning
The "Sunken Village" (2006), as the original title says, is an art project by the artist Timm Ulrichs. It is a 1:1 replica of the neighboring Holy Cross Church, a small village church from the Middle Ages. The twin suffers what could have happened to the original: it is largely buried under the now green mountain of rubbish. The copy was made of in-situ concrete and, at second glance, is clearly recognizable as a copy of the masonry structure due to its smooth and clean surface. HISTORY: With the construction of the Reichsautobahn in the 1930s, then a sewage treatment plant and finally the construction of a garbage dump in the 1950s, the village of Fröttmaning was in the way. The city of Munich acquired all the farms and buried the depopulated village under the waste of Munich's civilization. Only the Holy Cross Church from the 12th century was spared thanks to the commitment of some citizens.
