The Pont d'Arc is a natural arch in the south of the Ardèche. The structure is at least 500,000 years old and its dimensions are impressive: 54 meters high and 60 meters wide. The water gradually penetrated the limestone rock and eventually created a huge opening to the Gorges de l'Ardèche.

We were on this path today after the flood. Not recommended after the flood or in wet weather as you have to climb dangerous detours around boulders! Narrow places are not secured at all (wire rope on the rock face is desirable!). Only for sure-footed hikers with no fear of heights!

Also as a round trip from Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche - Aiguèze - Laval-Saint-Roman - Orgnac-l'Aven - Labastide-de-Virac - Salavas - Pont d'Ardèche - back on the panorama route. Driven on a Saturday in mid-June with little traffic. Very nice, about 70 km.

You can clearly see that the Ardèche River has gradually worn down the limestone rock and cut through it to create this impressive bridge that defies gravity. The Cirque d'Estre is of course the old course of the river which is now dried up and cut off after the river diverted. A geography lesson in 3D!

The Pont d'Arc is a natural stone bridge over the Ardèche River in the Ardèche department of southern France. It is 60 meters long, 54 meters high and is located about three kilometers from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc in the direction of Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche. The Pont d'Arc was created when the Ardèche in the Old Pleistocene broke through the natural barrier of the limestone at the narrowest point of a river bend, the Cirque d'Estre, and drained the Cirque d'Estre Breakthrough received as a stone bridge arch.

Balazuc is a French commune with 374 inhabitants in the Ardèche department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The residents are called Balazucains and Balazucaines. The village sits enthroned on the top of a steep rocky slope overlooking the Ardèche and is therefore classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France (most beautiful villages in France).
