Very interesting old citadel with rustic walls and wonderful views.

From 1625 onwards, the local castle was expanded into a citadel. Under the direction of the French fortress architect Vauban, the city's defenses were also fundamentally rebuilt by 1728. Even before the bridge, but outside the walls, a footpath, the Chemin de ronde, leads up to the citadel. The citadel is protected by four bastions in all directions; further walls extend towards the city, from which the streets and city gates could be bombarded with cannon fire.

It's great that there are always huts like this.

Privately owned shelter with beds, a table, and benches (donativo). Drinking water is available in front of the hut.

As you hike, approach the Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port gate for a truly historic experience. This iconic entrance, known as the Porte Saint-Jacques, welcomes you with its impressive stone arch. Take time to admire the gate’s old-world charm and the stunning views of the surrounding Basque countryside before exploring the cobbled streets of this picturesque town.
