Beautiful church in this village

Magnificent grain market opposite the church. Today it serves as a parking lot in Cazères.

Originally a small Gallo-Roman town built on the promontory of Montjoie and bordered by the Hurride and the Garonne, Cazères appears in history in the medieval period. A first church was then erected there[2]. Dependent successively on the house of Comminges then on the county of Toulouse, Cazères came under the house of Foix in the 14th century, then headed by Gaston Phœbus. During this period, the city suffered from unrest and wars which ravaged their region. This is how in 1355 the original church was destroyed by the English troops of the Black Prince[2]. At the end of the 14th century, the construction of a new church was launched, which would have the title Notre-Dame and Saint Quitterie as its patroness. In the 18th century, the church had the reputation of being the best decorated in the diocese of Rieux. During the Revolution, it was mutilated and stripped of its spiers and chapels. It was not until 1888 that its facade was restored by the architect H. d'Espouy who designed the two octagonal towers between which stands the Virgin of the Assumption.

This beautiful village is at the crossroads between the mountains and the plain. Its weekly market is really famous and attracts a lot of originals and people who live a bit on the margins of society. We thus meet a heterogeneous crowd as well as craftsmen and traders selling quality products. When the gendarmes arrive to carry out checks, out of solidarity, everyone warns each other. For that, Montbrun makes me think of a village of irreducible Gauls. Apart from Sunday which is lively, there are often deserted streets, but also the best baker in the area.

The old church was linked to the Cistercian abbey of Lumière-Dieu, in Comminges, destroyed during the Revolution. It is a small rural church built in the 17th century on foundations from the Romanesque period, and whose door is sheltered by an emban at the foot of the bell tower, itself pierced by two bays where the bells are located. Inside, the single nave is covered with a wooden coffered ceiling.

As the name suggests, the place was damp and water dripped through it. This pretty chapel was built between 1968 and 2001 by Father Piquemal. He first restored a Romanesque chapel near Arnave, near Tarascon (not that of Tartarin, the Ariège Tarascon) where a shelter was built for a miraculous stone reputed to cure epilepsy. He was later appointed to Montardit and took care of the restoration of the church of Sainte-Croix and then restored this chapel. “I started picking up pebbles, then stones all over the place, then I looked for a mason, he was masonry, I was doing the work... I was picking up pebbles, I was cutting beautiful stones... with the relentlessness of gold diggers. When the chapel was finished, I still had reserves of strength to build a Stations of the Cross outside. I had stones in mind. While walking through the woods in the area, I found large stones and wanted to take them away and put them on display. The idea that they could remain anonymous in the depths of the forests, under the foliage and the earth, seemed unfair to me. » In 1985 the chapel became an official place of pilgrimage. This very original site exudes a lovely atmosphere, even for non-Catholics, and is worth a detour.
