The single-nave, thatched building, constructed of fieldstone and brick, was built around 1240 as a simple church and houses several special art treasures, such as the group of apostles, the baptismal font, and an altar with an altarpiece. The neo-Romanesque bell tower was built in 1908.

Unknown bodies washed ashore were intended to be given a simple but dignified burial. Between 1906 and 1969, 32 people found their final resting place in the "Cemetery of the Homeless," as this quiet place is also called. The graves are marked with simple wooden crosses bearing the date of discovery.

The third Amrum cemetery, the "Cemetery of the Nameless," appears particularly mystical to visitors. It resembles a small grove and is surrounded by lilac bushes at the southern edge of Nebel, on the highest elevation in the village (approximately 18 meters above sea level), directly opposite the Amrum windmill. "There is still peace" is written in large letters above the entrance. All the unknown bodies, mostly those washed up on the Kniepsand sand beach, that have landed on Amrum since the memorial was established in 1906 are buried here. This cemetery contains simple wooden crosses, each bearing only a date.
