Waiting for the Lock Near Steenbergen lies the restored Benedensas lock complex. Since 1824, the locks protected the land behind it from high water from the Volkerak. They also bridged the height difference for shipping. The lock is called Benedensas because it lies on the lower reaches of the Vliet, unlike—indeed—the Bovensas. Rugged skippers would enjoy a drink in the café until they could pass through the lock. This is how it is told in the regional novels about the little boy Merijntje Gijzen. The Merijntje Gijzen walking route, right through Benedensas, takes you back to that time.

Well, it may be a geographical spot, but the industrial area and the mediocre road surfaces don't make it particularly attractive. A little further on, past the golf course on the dike, the charm of Zeeland begins 😎

Top surface, beautiful view, just have to watch out for cyclists... Perfect when the wind is at your back 😉

The Benedensas, sometimes also written as Beneden Sas, is a restored historic lock complex from the 19th century (1824 - 1884).

The footbridge over the lock is out of order. So unfortunately you can't go from the parking lot to the nature reserve at the Volkerak. It is not known how long this will take. Edze Veldman

Super nice road through super nice area!

The Arsenal as we know it today was built in 1793 to replace the old, dilapidated Arsenal. The rectangular brick building with wooden cornice was used as an arms and ammunition warehouse until the end of the fortress of Willemstad in 1926. After this period, the Arsenal was only used to store military goods. Since 1960, the striking building has been privately owned and regularly hosts cultural and social activities, such as the annual Christmas market in December.
