What an amazing structure and piece of engineering. It is the only wheel of its kind. Well worth the visit

The Forth & Clyde Canal crosses Scotland from the Forth to the Clyde. The whole length has a tow path which is always reliable, well surfaced traffic free running. It's flat and there are often bikes and walkers, but the running is excellent. This section is a nice distance from the Falkirk Wheel so you can make a nice length loop or out and back.

The Falkirk Wheel and surrounding area is managed by Scottish Canals. They licence a variety of catering trailers at the wheel, these include coffee and snacks most days and wood fired pizza in the evening. It's handy to be able to grab a coffee and watch the wheel at the start or after a run.

The Falkirk Wheel is an ingenious boat lifting device that connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It opened in 2002. It's a fascinating piece of kit and worth a stop on your run to watch it in action. The canal paths in both directions are brilliant for running, you've got miles of flat, traffic free & well surfaced running, perfect for training runs of any distance. Popular with bikes and walkers as well though so best get out early if you want to run without interruption.

The Kelpies are so impressive and definitely worth a visit- they're huge! It's easy cycling to get there, either via the canal or on Route 76 along the shoreline. We stopped a while and had lunch at the visitor centre cafe - all home-made on site and decent sized portions, so perfect for cycle touring!

It's worth a stop to refuel and marvel at the engineering feat that is the wheel. Plenty of benches to sit down with your bike beside you and get some refilling with food and drinks from the caravans onsite.

Come day or night, the Kelpies are one of the most impressive sights going. Good cafe, loads of outdoor seating and bike paths in all directions. One of my favourite places for sure!

A very special kind of ship lift. You should definitely see it.
