After the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene is the most frequently mentioned woman in the New Testament writings. Furthermore, according to the biblical accounts, Mary Magdalene is one of the three who anointed Jesus' body on Easter morning after his crucifixion and burial, and she was the very first person to encounter the risen Christ. Pope Francis has therefore honored her as the 'Apostle to the Apostles,' saying during a general audience: "She shows us the God who knows us, embraces us, and cares for our lives. Every person is a story of love that God writes on earth. Like Mary Magdalene, the life of every Christian is embraced by this overflowing joy: We have a God at our side who calls us by name and lifts us up, who transforms us and the world through his resurrection." The feast day of Saint Mary Magdalene in the liturgical calendar is unanimously celebrated on July 22 by the major Christian denominations.
