8月 23, 2024, Bar-sur-Aube
Via Francigena: During this stage, a stop in Bar-sur-Aube is a must. Situated on a north-south axis, the town acquired strategic importance and the status of a commercial centre during the period of the Counts of Champagne. The latter had indeed guaranteed the security of the merchants and set up an adapted logistical organisation that contributed to the development of Bar-sur-Aube as a commercial centre. Thus, from mid-February to mid-April, traders from Flanders and Italy exchanged oriental spices, silk, textiles and raw materials from Northern Europe. The architecture of the town bears witness to this past activity.

It was in 1115, on the borders of Champagne and Burgundy, that the future Bernard of Clairvaux, accompanied by 12 monks from Cîteaux, came to clear a clearing in the Val d'Absinthe. Later a labor force, the great abbey of the "clear valley", formed the group of the four "major" daughters (first foundations) of Cîteaux. Planted with vines and animated by barns, forges and mills, it will be strong with hundreds of filiations throughout Europe, definitively imbued with Cistercian spirituality.

Clairvaux Abbey is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Ville-sous-la-Ferté in the Aube department in France. The abbey was founded in 1115 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, one of the most important figures of the Cistercian order. The abbey was a center of religion, culture and politics in the Middle Ages and the mother of many other monasteries in Europe. The abbey was abolished in 1792 during the French Revolution and converted into a prison, which is still in use today. The abbey is located in a green valley and has an impressive architecture in Romanesque and Gothic style. The abbey is a historic monument and can be visited under a guide.

Clervaux, founded by St. Bernard, became a state security prison after the revolution and remains so to this day with 35 prisoners still in it. The prison is scheduled to close in 2023. Here, religious history is mixed with the depressing history of the prison. Despite everything, a very interesting 90-minute tour

It was by chance that we had lunch at Colombey les deux Eglises and wondered about the frequent visitors to the cemetery, who were devoutly stopping by a simple white marble cross. Then we quickly realized that we had found our rest stop not 20 meters away from the grave of the great French president and convinced European. What a nice coincidence. A nice place worth a visit. Although we had no time for a visit to the residential building (Small Castle), but we will certainly get all this after ...
