"Treasures of the World – Heritage of Humanity" (a German-language television series) honors special sites from all eras and continents in over 250 episodes with short film clips. Despite their diversity, they have one thing in common: they have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of the episodes presents the Canal du Midi. This is a connection – desired for centuries, but also considered technically impossible – between the southern coast of France on the Mediterranean and the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The aforementioned episode is available in the ARD Media Library at the following link: =>> https://www.ardmediathek.de/video/schaetze-der-welt/gcanal-du-midi-frankreich-folge-224/swr/Y3JpZDovL3N3ci5kZS82OTg2NDg2

The German-language television series "Treasures of the World - Heritage of Humanity" uses short film contributions to honor special sites from all eras and continents that have one thing in common: they have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. One of the episodes introduces the CANAL DU MIDI: "...the Romans already dreamed of a waterway between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Powerful people and doers from Charlemagne to Francis the First failed to realize this idea, even Leonardo da Vinci tinkered with it in vain. It was not built until the end of the 17th century. The Canal du Midi is a technical masterpiece by an individual, someone obsessed with the idea, by Pierre Paul Riquet. ..." => https://www.ardmediathek.de/video/schaetze-der-welt/gcanal-du-midi-frankreich-folge-224/swr/Y3JpZDovL3N3ci5kZS82OTg2NDg2

One of many locks along the route, sometimes with one chamber, sometimes with several.

The landscape is very beautiful, but unfortunately the cycle path here is no longer asphalted. Luckily it was dry where I was at the moment, it must have rained a few days before. It doesn't have to be asphalt, compacted gravel works too.

Source Wikipedia: The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Montgeard was built for the most part between 1522 and 15612, during the heyday of pastel culture in Lauragais. It has benefited from large donations from local families enriched by this business. In this, this "pastel church" testifies to the golden age of the "land of plenty" during the Renaissance. A funerary case intended to house the tombs of the main pastoral merchant families in the area, the church was in particular to celebrate the rise of the most powerful of them, the Durands, who at the same time became Lords of Montgeard. Following the southern Gothic style, the building surprises with the contrast between its very stripped and defensive exterior and the richness of its interior decoration, in particular sculpted. Its vault, painted in the 19th century in imitation of that of the cathedral of Sainte-Cécile d´Albi, earned it its nickname "Little Albi". The church of Montgeard and its bell tower were classified as a historic monument by decree of April 25, 1890.

The Écluse de l'Océan is an architecturally beautifully built single-chamber lock. It marks the highest point of the Canal du Midi (Col de Naurouze or Seuil de Lauragais: the watershed between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean).

Up to this point, near the hamlet of Montferrand, the cycle path on the Canal Du Midi has a very good asphalt surface. From Port Lauragais, the cycle path often runs along paths with natural tracks. After it rains, as it did for me, these paths are very difficult to ride with a trekking bike and luggage and are actually not recommended. Avoiding the road can be very dangerous with so much car traffic. The Canal Du Midi between Toulouse and Carcassonne is very scenic. . . but when it's wet the cycle path is unrideable for me, what a shame!

It is the place of the "water division" in which the waters that feed the Canal du Midi, coming from the overlying Bassin de Saint Ferreol, divide to feed the two branches of the Canal which is at its highest point here. To the right the water begins to descend towards the "Ecluse de l'Ocean" towards Toulouse, the Garonne and the Atlantic Ocean, and to the left towards the "Ecluse de la Mediterranee" which, through the French south (Midi, in fact) reaches through Carcassonne and Beziers the Mediterranean Sea.

Ideal for a break, and the starting point for a section of road along the canal (not very rolling at this level), or the path that runs along the Rigole.

This lock is located in a beautiful landscape near a large park and a small bistro where you can bridge the lock time wonderfully.
