The castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century.
Only at the top of the rocks there are sparse remains of buildings. The keep is also recognizable.
Better preserved is the protective wall around the castle.

Beautiful castle with phenomenal view. Although it is a climb, this mini walk will not be a problem for many people. Well worth the effort to go and have a look here.

It is worth climbing the steep steps of the ruins to the top of the remains of the tower... From the top you have a wonderful view over the wooded hills of the Vosges...

The castle ruins in the natural area, which have been listed as a historical monument since 1898, are not the remains of one but of two castles. The lower castle (Unternideck) was probably built in the first half of the 13th century. Today, the square keep and a fortified wall that separated the residential building can still be seen. The keep shows a change in the structure that indicates an interruption in construction (formats and unevenness of the stones, structure of the vaults...). The upper castle (Obernideck) was probably built in the 14th century. Its ruins are less well preserved, only a few heavily restored walls can still be seen. A castle on the Nideck was first mentioned in 1264. Sire Burckart lived here at that time. From 1336, the castle was a fief of the Diocese of Strasbourg and was then given to the citizens of Strasbourg. The inhabitants of both castles concluded several truces, especially in 1393 and 1422. These "peace treaties", which bear witness to the history of the place, laid down the rules for coexistence, supplies and armament of the fortress. From the 15th century onwards, the castle changed hands several times in successive attacks. The castle was finally destroyed in 1636 in the Thirty Years' War. Text of the information board

Schirmeck Castle is a medieval building erected during the 13th century. Destroyed during the war, the inhabitants used the ruins to build the bell tower of the village as well as their house. In 1969, the municipality decided to restore part of it. It is now open to the public. The panorama offered by its tower is majestic.

Located on top of a rock formation in the middle of the forest, this magnificent ruined castle offers a beautiful view of Wangenbourg-Engenthal and its surroundings. Besides its setting, the fortification is a jewel in itself because of its vast enclosure. It has been classified as a historical monument since 1898.

The second ruin of the castles of Nideck is above the first. You get there by a small staircase. You can also climb the tower by a staircase and there is a magnificent view of the whole valley.

The castle is located 480m above sea level in the small village of Wangenbourg. It was erected in the 13th century in Vosges sandstone by the Lords of Wangen, on a natural rocky outcrop. This mount castle served as a defense against looters. The villagers were welcomed into the castle in order to be safe. To access it, you have to cross a bridge that leads directly to the inner courtyard. From there you can admire the many windows, as well as the remains of a magnificent Gothic style fireplace. You can then access the 24m dungeon and climb it if you have the courage. Once the ascent is complete, you will have a breathtaking panorama of the Mossig valley before your eyes. The tour of the tower is however open from April to November. And it is possible to visit the castle on a free visit all year round. Access is free and free all year round. There is parking at the tourist office.

Nideck Castle (Château du Nideck in French) is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle in the Alsatian Vosges. It belongs to the municipality of Oberhaslach in the Bas-Rhin department. The castle is five kilometers northwest of Oberhaslach at an altitude of 550 meters on the slope of the Bärenberg on a steep rhyolite rock above the Haseltal. Immediately below is the 25 meter high Nidecker waterfall (Cascade du Nideck). The ruins can be reached via hiking trails from the Auberge Moosberg or from the forester's lodge Nideck (both on the D 218 Oberhaslach-Wangenbourg road). https://www.visit.alsace/de/218006756-burgruinen-nideck/

Very good view from the upper part of the ruin. However, I would only recommend the way to the upper part if you have good grip and no fear of heights. I would have my concerns with children or the elderly. I would rather recommend the direction of the Hirschfelsen, a comparable view, less activity and less "crawling".
