The castle ruins in the natural area, which have been listed as a historical monument since 1898, are not the remains of one but of two castles. The castle is located 480m above sea level in the small village of Wangenbourg. It was erected in the 13th century in Vosges sandstone by the Lords of Wangen, on a natural rocky outcrop. This mount castle served as a defense against looters. The villagers were welcomed into the castle in order to be safe. Very good view from the upper part of the ruin. However, I would only recommend the way to the upper part if you have good grip and no fear of heights. I would have my concerns with children or the elderly. I would rather recommend the direction of the Hirschfelsen, a comparable view, less activity and less "crawling".
