"The earliest known works of art of mankind were created in Europe over thirty thousand years ago. The continent was still largely covered by glaciers. This did not stop the ancestor of modern man, the Cro Magnon, from decorating rocks and caves with wonderful paintings, engravings and sculptures. The Vézère valley in the French Périgord is a particularly rich treasure trove of this work. Since the discovery of the Lascaux cave, the Sistine Chapel of prehistory, science has had to say goodbye to the primitive ancestors from the Ice Age.
