Not the shortest route to the Mausoleum but one of the best.
Summer will show you plenty of wild flowers in the meadows and an abundance of birds. Beware of the heat though, as you will be spending long periods out in the open.
In winter there is much less wildlife and lots of cloying mud in the valley

Starting at Gatesgarth this walk allows you to visit Buttermere half way round if refreshments are required.
NOTE - there is a narrow tunnel with no lights and can be wet underfoot.

We had to cut this walk short because the path was flooded. Normally you can walk another mile or so down to the fort.
