    La prima volta che lo Zwalmmolen compare nei libri di storia è nel 1227, quando era ancora proprietà dell'Abbazia di San Pietro a Corbie. In origine il mulino lavorava principalmente grano, semi di lino, cicoria, mais, riso e perfino tabacco.
    Questo tradizionale mulino ad acqua traeva la sua energia dal Zwalmbeek, che con la sua corrente azionava un imponente sistema tecnico all'interno. Un bell'esempio di artigianato vecchio di quasi un millennio. Lo Zwalmmolen però non è l’unico mulino della zona.
