What are the main tour options available at Postojna Cave?

The primary experience at Postojna Cave involves a guided tour that begins with a thrilling underground train ride deep into the cave system. This is followed by a walking portion of approximately 1.5 kilometers through magnificent chambers, including the famous Concert Hall. Tours are available in multiple languages or via audio guide. For a more comprehensive visit, many choose to combine their cave tour with a visit to the nearby Predjama Castle.

How long does a typical Postojna Cave tour last, and what is the walking distance?

A standard guided tour of Postojna Cave lasts approximately 1.5 hours. This includes both the unique underground train ride and about 1.5 kilometers of walking on well-maintained, non-slip paths. Is Postojna Cave accessible for visitors with mobility challenges or wheelchairs?

Postojna Cave strives to be accessible. While the walking portion includes an initial incline and decline, visitors with mobility concerns or those using wheelchairs have the option to remain on the underground train for the entire duration of the ride, still enjoying significant parts of the cave. The paths are generally well-developed and non-slip. It's advisable to check with the cave's official visitor information for the most current accessibility details and recommendations.

What is the best way to get to Postojna Cave, and is parking available?

Postojna Cave is conveniently located near the town of Postojna, approximately 46 kilometers from Ljubljana. It is easily accessible by car, and ample parking is available on-site. However, parking lots can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Arriving early in the day is highly recommended. For those relying on public transport, there are bus connections from Ljubljana and other major Slovenian towns to Postojna, with the cave entrance a short distance from the bus station.

Are dogs allowed inside Postojna Cave?

Generally, pets, including dogs, are not permitted inside Postojna Cave due to the sensitive ecosystem and the presence of the unique olm. However, policies can vary, and sometimes kennels or designated waiting areas might be available. It's always best to check the official Postojna Cave website or contact them directly for their most current pet policy before your visit.

What should I wear for a visit to Postojna Cave, considering the underground climate?

The temperature inside Postojna Cave remains consistently cool, typically around 8-10°C (46-50°F) year-round, regardless of the weather outside. It's also home to the endemic olm, or 'human fish', which can be observed in an aquarium.
