Son nom est dérivé du pont de pierre à cinq arches, construit sur la rivière en 1651.
Il y a un déversoir incurvé juste en dessous du pont Newby qui contrôle la quantité d'eau qui s'écoule dans la rivière Leven depuis le lac Windermere.
