What is the historical significance of Odenheim, beyond its general past?

Odenheim boasts a rich history, first documented in 769 AD. A central element is the Odenheim Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded around 1108. This abbey significantly influenced the region's development until its dissolution in 1802/1803. It was initially established under the Hirsau monastic reform and accumulated vast estates. Although the original monastery was destroyed in 1525, its legacy shaped Odenheim into an important trade center.

The Siegfriedsbrunnen (Siegfried's Spring), previously known as Seesbrunnen, is located approximately 1.5 kilometers north of Odenheim's town center. It holds legendary significance as one of the purported sites where Siegfried from the Nibelungenlied was murdered. In 1932, the spring was captured and marked with a plaque depicting Hagen throwing a spear at Siegfried, commemorating this ancient tale.
