    La vue depuis les ruines d'Altenahr et de Mayschoß, où l'Ahr serpente de manière sauvage et romantique dans des virages étroits à travers les rochers et les vignobles escarpés en terrasses de murs en pierres sèches, est fantastique. Le climat méditerranéen et le sol d'ardoise créent des conditions optimales pour la maturation des raisins à dominante bleue. La route des vins est un incontournable à parcourir une fois dans sa vie.

    Depuis le château d'Are, on a une très belle vue sur Altenahr et la vallée de l'Ahr. Les ruines du château sont situées à 240 m d'altitude. RHN au-dessus d'Altenahr.
    Le château se dresse sur le pic rocheux d'une montagne, dont les flancs est et sud s'élèvent abruptement. Siège ancestral des comtes d'Are, il fut construit dans la première moitié du XIIe siècle par Théodoric d'Are, passa en possession de l'électorat de Cologne au XIIIe siècle et connut de nombreuses extensions aux XIVe et XVe siècles.
