    Tomé de Sousa (1503-1579) fue el primer gobernador general de la colonia portuguesa de Brasil desde 1549 hasta 1553. Era un noble y soldado nacido en Rates, Póvoa de Varzim. Sousa nació noble y participó en expediciones militares en África, luchó contra los moros y comandó la nau Conceição a la India portuguesa, parte de la armada de Fernão de Andrade.
