The current Hochkreuz Wilzenberg is an imposing 28-meter (approximately 92 feet) tall cross. It was erected in 2015 and is constructed from five tons of hot-dip galvanized steel, painted anthracite, offering robust weather resistance. The crossbeams are 8.50 meters long, and it is secured by four steel cables.
The tradition of a prominent cross on Wilzenberg dates back to 1626. The current steel cross, installed in 2015, replaced a 28-meter wooden cross from 1972. That wooden cross had to be rebuilt in 1980 after falling due to a frayed guy wire, and eventually deteriorated. The mountain itself has a rich history spanning over 2,200 years, serving as a place of refuge and settlement since pre-Christian times, with evidence of Iron Age fortifications and early medieval castles.

Yes, the trails around Hochkreuz Wilzenberg are generally dog-friendly. Many hikers bring their canine companions to enjoy the natural surroundings. It's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or other visitors, and to clean up after them.
While the monument itself is not directly accessible by car, a dedicated hiking car park is available at the base of the Wilzenberg mountain. From there, visitors can begin their ascent on foot. Parking can fill up quickly during peak seasons or on weekends, so arriving earlier in the day is advisable.
Public transport options directly to the base of Wilzenberg are limited. Visitors typically travel by car to the hiking car park. However, local bus services may connect to nearby towns like Grafschaft or Schmallenberg, from which a longer walk or taxi ride to the trailhead would be necessary.
Beyond the Hochkreuz, visitors can explore the historic Marienkapelle (St. Mary's Chapel) dating back to 1633, and follow the Way of the Cross with its 14 stations. A major highlight is the Wilzenbergturm, a 17-meter high observation tower built in 1891, which offers extensive panoramic views across the "Land of a Thousand Mountains" and the Rothaargebirge.
While the area is beautiful in winter, conditions can be challenging. The mountain is prone to severe weather, including snow and ice. Winter hikes are possible but require appropriate gear, such as sturdy, waterproof boots and potentially traction aids. Always check local weather forecasts and trail conditions before planning a winter visit.
The immediate vicinity of the Hochkreuz Wilzenberg on the mountain itself does not have cafes or restaurants. However, the nearby towns of Grafschaft and Schmallenberg offer a variety of dining options and accommodations, ranging from hotels to guesthouses, where visitors can find refreshments and lodging after their hike.
The Wilzenberg mountain stands out due to its distinct geological formation, rising independently from the surrounding landscape. This unique position contributes to the unobstructed panoramic views from its summit. The mountain's solitary nature also provides a sense of tranquility and detachment, enhancing the natural charm of the area.
