La primera piedra del edificio de la iglesia se colocó en 1652 y el complejo de la iglesia y el monasterio estuvieron en funcionamiento a partir de 1670. El monasterio recibió su esplendor barroco, que aún hoy se puede admirar en las salas estatales de la residencia, en el siglo XVIII. En 1802, las tropas bávaras ocuparon el monasterio principesco y la ciudad imperial de Kempten, tras lo cual el monasterio fue disuelto y desde entonces la basílica de San Lorenzo es exclusivamente una iglesia parroquial.

La primera gran iglesia del sur de Alemania después de la Guerra de los Treinta Años (la construcción comenzó en 1652, los maestros de obras Michael Beer y Johann Serro) todavía impresiona hoy con su magnífica fachada de doble torre (agujas de 1900) y la imponente cúpula sobre el coro. En el interior de la Basílica de San Lorenzo son fascinantes los ricos muebles y altares, así como la sillería del coro tallada con raros paneles de escagliola.
