The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) is responsible for 23,000 km² of sea waterways and around 7,300 km of inland waterways. The task of the WSV is to keep rivers and canals navigable so that an efficient and future-oriented waterway network is available. The former farm complex and mill is now the operations center of the Main-Danube Canal. The two-story steep-roof buildings were built in the 18th century, and in 1835 the then owner Meixner built a house chapel. Since 2017 the building has housed the "Waterway Adventure World" information and visitor center. Directly on the Main-Danube Canal in the Gösselthalmühle in Beilngries, visitors are given exciting information about the waterway, technology, shipping and nature. At interactive stations, visitors have the opportunity to learn about and discover topics related to shipping and waterways. The permanent exhibition is aimed at everyone and is suitable for all ages. On the ground floor of the mill building, the waterway and shipping administration is presented. You can listen to the radio traffic between a bargeman and a lock keeper or understand the differences in height that the Main-Danube Canal overcomes. The upper floor is dedicated to the topic of water and inland shipping. At listening stations, navigators, divers, dam inspectors and civil engineers talk about their profession. The Gösselthalmühle is not only a museum, but also the command center for the Main-Danube Canal - from here, shipping traffic and water levels are monitored.

The Berching lock was built between July 1987 and July 1991 as part of the construction of the Main-Danube Canal federal waterway. It is designed as a savings lock with three savings basins west of the lock basin. The lock has its own command post, but has been remotely operated from the WSV district headquarters in Dietfurt since 2007. The Dietfurt, Riedenburg and Kelheim locks are also remotely controlled from there. From 2024, twelve locks will be controlled from the Nuremberg control center, and later all 16 canal locks.
