Harnessing the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of human discovery, whose origins can be traced back to ancient times. The River Lathkill is a winterbourne stream, it dries up over the summer. The Victorian's valued the clear water and excellent trout, so they built a series of weirs to trap the water and provide good fishing. There is a footpath through the woods on the north side of the river, allowing access and viewing of the weirs.
