The Großer Feldberg bus stop is an important hub for hikers and visitors to the Taunus. It is served by bus line 57 of the Hochtaunus Transport Association (VHT), which runs every 60 minutes on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays and every two hours from Monday to Friday between Königstein and the Großer Feldberg.

The red cross marks a pass that was used by historic trade routes and was so important that the Romans built a fort to control it. The castle in Oberreifenberg later served the same function in the Middle Ages.

The Sandplacken (669 m) is the pass between Oberursel and Schmitten im Taunus and thus into the Weil valley, which represents a natural connection towards the Lahn valley and Weilburg. Celtic finds on the Taunushang bear witness to the fact that people were already using this pass in pre-Christian times. In Roman times, the small fort Altes Jagdhaus secured the pass over which the Upper German-Rhaetian Limes runs. There is a hotel (with restaurant) and a café/restaurant on the Sandplacken.
