Parking is free and there is plenty of it. You can walk around the crater on a paved, car-free road for about 1.3km. The volcano itself is about 2 million years old and last erupted about 7,000 years ago.

Be careful, there are men at both starting points of this hiking route who supposedly want to show you the way/a good parking spot and the waterfalls. At the same time, these men are also connected to each other and commute back and forth between these points. After we gave the first man 100 MUR (unfortunately we got out to see the waterfall that he wanted to show us from a distance) and hoped to have fobbed him off, we met him at the second starting point a few minutes later, where he tried to hide from us, the other men almost jumped in front of our car to 'help us' and waved vigorously where we should go. All in all, a scary situation that we wanted to get out of quickly. Take care of yourselves!
