The Brod Fortress is a baroque border fortress on the Sava River, and at the same time a category zero monument and landmark of Slavonski Brod that forms its core. In Brod, one of the important strategic and traffic places that supervised the most important crossing on the Sava towards Bosnia and connected the main trade routes, between 1715 and 1780 the great Imperial and royal Slavonian border fortress Brod was built.

Slavonski Brod is a city in eastern Croatia and the industrial, cultural, administrative, judicial and financial center of the Brod-Posavina County. In terms of size, number of inhabitants and importance, it is the second city in Slavonia, and the sixth largest in the Republic of Croatia after Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek and Zadar. It was declared the most beautiful city in Croatia by the Croatian Tourist Board for 2009.

Ivan Meštrović, the most famous and influential Croatian sculptor of the first half of the 20th century, was born in Vrpolje on August 15, 1883, while his father Mate and mother Marta were working temporarily in Slavonia. Information about the birthplace of the great sculptor is recorded in the Register of Baptisms of the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist in Vrpolje, where Ivan Meštrović was registered under the surname Gabrilović.
