The cathedral was built on the remains of the Roman baths, on the site where the baptismal font and the first Christian cathedral were built in the 5th century AD. The cathedral in Krk bears the title of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the inscription on the building, it probably still existed in the second half of the 5th and early 6th centuries, so its title is related to the Council of Ephesus (431) and the great celebration marking the recognition of Mary as Mother of God. The Romanesque building has been preserved to this day with an exceptionally rich inventory, along with later minor Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque alterations. Krk Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, is located in the town of Krk on the Croatian island of the same name. Dating back to the 5th century, it was built on the ruins of Roman baths. Its current appearance is a mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque style elements added over the centuries. Particularly notable is the free-standing bell tower from the 16th century. The cathedral serves as the religious and cultural center of the island and is a significant example of early Christian architecture in Croatia.
