Prepare for cold knee deep water and stony ground. It is best to take the entrance from the other side of the cave. A headlamp comes in handy later on since the caves are very dark.

Between 1856-1857, an outlaw by the name of Juan Flores and his outlaw gang used the Dripping Cave as a hideout and shelter. They were infamously known to be livestock and stagecoach thieves, hence why the place is also known today as “Robbers Cave”. You can still find some evidence to back up that story, such as peg holes in the ceiling that they used to hang their gear and even wagon tracks in certain parts of the landscape.

Cave Rock, per the title, is a small cave inside a large rock formation. The official trail runs across the top of the cave, but if you hop on the dirt path running parallel, there is a side trail that goes past the cave opening and rejoins the main trail.

Stevens Trail is a historic route listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it originally served as a toll road for miners traveling between Iowa Hill and Colfax. Rediscovered in 1969 by a boy scout named Eric Kiel, who went on to re-chart the path as part of his scouting project. The trail has wonderful views and a cave along the way, great for a mid hike break. There's a mix of shaded and exposed sections so be sure to take plenty of water and avoid the hottest part of the day if you're here during summer.

The Bear Gulch Cave has two sections, with the lower section usually open for about 10 months of the year, and the upper section closed most of the time to protect the endangered bats that live there. The entire cave is closed from mid-May (sometimes earlier if it's a warmer Spring) to mid-July for the bats' pupping season. There are also limited openings of the whole cave for one to four weeks in March and October, depending on the presence of bats. You can check the opening status on the park's website.
