The summit is difficult to reach; hiking poles are recommended as there are loose rocks and many old terraces to negotiate on poorly marked routes. Cloud formations make it exciting.

Magnificent view of the Ionian Sea and towards Etna from the top of the mountain. Further down you can see a departure-flight point very popular with paragliding enthusiasts

What a fantastic view from up here! (360°). A wooden sign marks the summit (Sicily's second highest!). The path is steep on all sides but always easy to walk, never really exposed; only loose rocks could pose a problem. The area was apparently quite busy in the past (ski lifts, etc.), but nature is slowly reclaiming the infrastructure...great beech "groves"!

Unfortunately, the infrastructures set up for the filming of the movie Odyssey prevent people from reaching the “castle”, I hope they remove them soon.

Beware that the top route is not currently available. It's a one way trip to the viewpoint and then back! We saw people updating the route, so hopefully this will be fixed soon. Take care that this is a pretty hectic route with a lot of climbing and hard to see tracks and A LOT of prickly bushes, so long trousers are definitely recommended

Climbing Mount Santa Caterina and its castle is an experience that offers spectacular views. The path winds through a wild and rocky landscape, culminating in a breathtaking view of the coast and the sea. At sunset, the golden light envelops the island and the castle, creating an atmosphere of pure magic. The castle, an ancient fortification, still retains its charm despite the time and abandonment that threaten its structure.

What is crazy is that the ground is still warm to hot 23 years after the eruption in 2001.
