Ψηλά πάνω από το Cookstown, στους πρόποδες των εντυπωσιακών Sperrin Mountains, θα βρείτε τους πέτρινους κύκλους Beaghmore. Αυτή είναι μια από τις πιο συναρπαστικές αρχαιολογικές τοποθεσίες της Ιρλανδίας. Enjoy some peace and serenity as you jog along the shores of the beautiful and calm Altnaheglish Reservoir, situated in the Sperring Area of Natural Beauty. The reservoir is located in the Banagher Forest, which is home to some of the oldest ancient oak woodlands in Ireland. It's a true place of beauty!

Beaghmore (Bheitheach Mhór), meaning ‘big place of birch trees’. The stones speak of ancient rituals and to a people who understood astronomy. When you visit this ancient site look up in wonder at the sky and reflect, that the people that built these monuments observed the same sky, sun, moon and stars.

With Barnes Top and Knockanbane Mountain to the east and Sawel Mountain to the south east, Sperrins Road carves through the landscape with cracking views all around. There is some descent climbing to get here but it's worth it.

There are 7 stone circles, 12 cairns and 10 rows of stones here at Beaghamore. In total 1269 stones were discovered under the peat during the 1930s. The site dates back to 2900 - 2600 BC.

Ogham Stones are rare in Northern Ireland and this is the only one in County Tyrone. It is marked with an ancient alphabet, thought to be the earliest form of the Irish language. It reads; 'Do Te Tto Maqi Maglant'. This refers to two males. 'Maqi' means 'son of'.

Sawel Mountain stands at 678m and is the highest peak in the Sperrins range, and the 8th highest in Northern Ireland. The vegetation around the summit consists of montane heathland, featuring a medley of plant life including heather, bilberries and cowberries. From the summit, you can enjoy uninterrupted views across the countryside of County Londonderry and Tyrone. It's all downhill from this point on, so you can enjoy a scenic descent back to the carpark.
