Casemates are actually a kind of bunker before the term existed: in various places in the fortifications of Menen, such spaces can be found where soldiers could take cover and fire from. The fortifications of Menen largely date from the period of French occupation in the 17th century. In 1920, a new branch of the Leie was excavated in Menen and fitted with locks. In 1990, engineers diverted the course of the Leie again, creating a small island between the old and new riverbeds.
