Über Postwege - Royal Roads of Saxony
We're bringing the 1700s Royal Roads of Saxony back to life as historic cycling tours. The old routes, following historic towns, countless castles and traditional European landscapes, are based on one of Europe's finest systems of roads, maps and beautiful sandstone signage in the early eighteenth century.
We research the itineraries using the actual maps from 1690-1725, the royal postal timetables and the inscriptions listed on the Postdistanzsäulen, beautiful sandstone monuments that can often still be seen in the town squares of countless towns in Saxony. Then we match these itineraries with Germany's modern cycling infrastructure, one of the advanced in the world, to create cycling tours that people from anywhere can take to experience this fascinating and often undiscovered part of Europe in the way it was done 300 years ago.
I am a New Yorker living in Pirna, Germany, that is passionate about cycling, history, maps and beer gardens.
The tours here are generally suitable for any bike that is comfortable on both on and off road surfaces. I use road, gravel, singlespeed, and Brompton bikes. E-bikes would be fine too.
