Having been up at our Tottenham site & leaving early, I thought I'd take advantage & walk from London Fields. This walk deliberately takes in certain highlights: Broadway Market area; the conversion in progress of the Bethnal Green Gas Holders; Cyprus Street & the unusual arched external shutters & street-specific war memorial; Peckover Butchers (their "Bethnal Green" sausages, remain the best I've ever had); Simply Fresh supermarket (they are part of a franchise, but have their own character & a great cheese counter); & Britannia Fish & Chips (best non-gentrified F&C in the area).

Thought I'd venture out into Essex, having seen this area feature heavily in a local's Komoot walks (you must know who you are!). Wasn't in the best mood as my back started aching, my boots (now replaced) leaked & I had to cut things short & not go back through the lovely Memorial park.

A short walk using parts of 3 long distance pathways: New River, LOOP, & the Hertfordshire Chain. Having just watched John Rogers attempt to walk the New River, I wanted to revisit the best bit; Enfield Village & combine it with a garden centre excursion. There was some lovely Autumn sun still to be had. Also, I think they route of the LOOP has changed & Open Maps needs an update? There were some beautiful very new fingerposts that did not send me via the route on Komoot.

Starting in Staines, across the Staines Moors (which contained a lot more cows than I would have expected). From there, throught some weirdly adjacent to Heathrow. Then through the Heathrow Biodiversity Area, which I belielive primarily exists so a plane taking off crashing just after landing doesn't kill too many people. Past that, more nature including a lovely bit on a hilltop called the Keyhole, which has stone blocks from the original Waterloo Bridge. Then back into suburbia, including a widely random cemetary with some over-the-top monuments. Finally up to West Drayton station. Final stop a pub by the station for a few pints. Good day out for a group hike.

I met up with a few hiking friends from Komoot bright and early at Vauxhall Station, and together we caught the train to Staines to begin our adventure. From the station, we made our way through Staines Moor, a surprisingly wild stretch of land where cows grazed freely against a backdrop of open skies and the gentle sound of the River Colne. The route took us through peaceful countryside trails and across wooden footbridges, passing into Stanwell Moor and along sections of the Colne Valley Path, where the river meandered quietly beside us. We even stumbled upon The Keyhole, a quirky and unexpected discovery that added a nice sense of mystery to the journey. As we walked, planes roared overhead on their approach to Heathrow, a constant reminder of how close we were to one of the world’s busiest airports, yet still surrounded by calm and green spaces. After just over four hours of steady walking and good conversation, we arrived in West Drayton, where we rounded off the day with a few cheeky pints at a cosy pub just around the corner from the station. It was the perfect end to a wonderful hike, with great weather, great company and a route full of character and small surprises along the way.

Unexpectedly lovely in the early stages, across Staines, Stanwell, and Harmondsworth Moors and the Heathrow Biodiversity Site, following the rivers of the Colne Valley with constant flights overhead. Less enamoured with West Drayton and its petty xenophobia.
