    Er lehrte Literatur an den Universitäten von Huamanga und San Marcos sowie an den Universitäten Southampton (England), Nizza (Frankreich), Eötvos Lórand (Budapest), Berkeley und Virginia (USA). Er war Gast der Abtei Royamment in Paris, wo er ein Übersetzungsseminar über seine Arbeit organisierte, sowie Gast der Japan Foundation in Tokio.

In den Jahren 1960 bis 1964 studierte er Literaturwissenschaft an der „Katholischen Universität“ und der „San Marcos Universität“ wo er 1974 auch promovierte. Im Jahr 2000 erhielt Cisneros in Mexiko den internationalen „Gabriela Mistral-Preis“ für sein Gesamtwerk.
