    Die Gruft der Herzöge von Kurland im Schloss Jelgava (Mitau) ist die größte Beisetzungsstätte dieser Art in Lettland und eine der wenigen Beisetzungsstätten einer Herrscherdynastie auf der Welt, die man besichtigen kann.
    In der Gruft gibt es 21 Sarkophage und 9 Särge, in denen 24 Angehörige der Dynastie Kettler und 6 Vertreter der Dynastie Biron von 1569 bis 1791 beigesetzt worden sind. Im Laufe der Jahre wurde sie schwer verwüstet und ausgeraubt, doch nun erfüllt die Gruft der Herzöge von Kurland wieder ihren ursprünglichen Zweck und ist ihrem Status als geschichtliches und kunsthistorisches Denkmal entsprechend wiederhergestellt worden (Quelle: rundale.net/de/gruft/).

    Schloss Jelgava (auch: Schloss Mitau, lettisch Jelgavas pils) ist das größte Barockschloss im Baltikum. Es wurde im 18. Jahrhundert nach Plänen von Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli als Herrschersitz der Herzöge von Kurland und Semgallen in ihrer Hauptstadt Mitau (heute: Jelgava) errichtet. Als Sommersitz diente den Herzögen das nahe gelegene, ebenfalls von Rastrelli geplante Schloss Rundāle (Wikipedia).
