    Vollends frei gelegt wurde die ganze Anlage erst in den dreißiger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Notkirche, die dann zum Schutz der wertvollen Mosaiken errichtet wurde, tat ihren Dienst bis in die 70er Jahre hinein. Doch die Würde dieses Heiligtums und die wachsenden Besucherzahlen riefen immer mehr danach, eine neue Kirche an dieser Stelle zu errichten.
